Can I install Oracle 8i on Windows XP Professional? If yes, then what are the minimum requriements needed (for a home PC)? What are the steps for installation? Which is the best OS for Oracle8i, Windows XP Professional, Windows 2000 Professional or Windows 2000 Server?

According to Oracle's certification matrix, you cannot install Oracle 8.1.7.4 on the Windows XP operating system. Only Oracle release 9.2 and above is supported and certified for Windows XP. You can probably install Oracle 8.1.7.4 on Windows 2000 but it is now de-supported by Oracle, so it might be difficult to obtain support if you were to encounter a problem. If possible, I would suggest installing at least Oracle release 9.2. To review the minimum prerequisites for installation, the Oracle9i (9.2.0.1.0) Database Installation Guide for Windows is a good place to start.
