Backup and recovery of Oracle 10g with forgotten admin password

An Oracle user asks how to take backup and recovery of Oracle 10g after forgetting the admin password.

How do I take the backup and recovery of Oracle 10g database sever when I have forgotten the admin password?
Sign on to the server as someone in the 'dba' Unix/Linux group. If you are on Windows, sign on as someone in the 'ora_dba' group. Once you have signed on in this manner, you can do the following to obtain administrative privileges with the database:

sqlplus /nolog connect / as sysdba

At this point, you can use the ALTER USER command to change the forgotten password to something you do know.

If you do not know the password of a user in the required group, you can sign on as root (or Administrator in Windows) and create an account or change a user's password.
