Backing up Oracle before installing a patch set

I am new to Oracle on Windows. What method or procedure would you use to back up Oracle prior to installing a patch set? My OS is Windows 2003.
To make things easy, I would perform a cold backup. I would shut down the database, and then use OS commands to copy the control files, online redo logs and database datafiles to a backup location. Just to be safe, I would back up the %ORACLE_HOME% directory and the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Oracle hive in my registry as well. Then you can perform your upgrade. Should you have problems, you can restore the Oracle registry settings, Oracle software and the database.
